Big Time Rush at Del Mar Fairgrounds!

Article and Photography by Monserrat Jimenez
Kendall Schmidt, Logan Henderson, Carlos Pena, and James Maslow, also known as Big Time Rush, returned to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego, Calif. to spearhead the second night of their Summer Break Tour.

Alongside headliner Victoria Justice, the concert was held in midst of the San Diego Country Fair, which gave the show an added boost of energy to an already pumped up crowd. Sound check was full of life as the guys played some acoustic versions of fan favorites that were to be heard later on that night. In between songs, “Rushers” were allowed to ask the guys questions, and let it be known that fans did not hold back on the creativity! One of the only male “Rushers” at sound check asked the guys if they “lifted” and this got an excited reaction from Pena and Henderson as they showed off their biceps (quite impressive!) and responded that they were still working on Kendall. Maslow is a San Diego native and mentioned many times throughout sound check how happy he was to be home.

After sound check, all fans were let into the venue to find their seats, buy merch, and get comfortable before the tour’s opening acts, Jackson Guthy and Olivia Somerlyn. This is Guthy’s second time being an opening act for the guys, and Olivia’s first. Guthy took to the stage first while everyone was getting settled and got the crowd’s attention immediately with his smooth lyrics and dance worthy beats. Following Guthy was Somerlyn, who interacted with the crowd from the get-go. She came out with a smile and got people out of their seats and clapping along. Her energy was through the roof and the on-going sunset was the best way to send off the crowd into the headliners.
Victoria Justice made a spectacular entrance full of lights that got the crowd immediately on their feet. Justice was full of energy and as the sun went down, the intensity of the show went up. Her set list was jam packed with fan favorites that made everyone sing along. Her set was full of dance moves and surprises that had everyone in the crowd jumping up and wanting more! Justice also took a moment to talk about the charity she supports called “Girl Up” that helps underprivileged girls that don’t have the opportunity that some of the rest of world gets. Justice ended her set with a bang and sent the crowd into the BTR set with screams and cheers that would deafen just about anyone.
And finally, the time had arrived for BTR to take the stage. As a huge BTR banner waved in front of the stage, the anticipation of the crowd was killing just about everyone around. Finally the lights and the banner went down and BTR appeared right in front of the crowd, who welcomed them with the screams of the most excited people in the tri-state area. The guys started the show with so much energy that it was almost too much to handle! The lights shined so bright and the music was blasting the crystal clear voices of each of the guys. Two large screens allowed for an up close look at the band performing and doing those classic dance moves that take them one step above to all other bands out there. Their synchronization was on-point and the ambiance was breathing out summer night fun.

They did their acoustic set with the help of guitarist and beloved fan favorite, Dustin Belt. The tradition of choosing a girl from the audience to be the coveted title of “World Wide Girl” is still in full effect in this tour. The guys transitioned from slow songs to the new material from their latest album “24/Seven.” SPOILER ALERT: During one of the newest songs, the guys even went out of their way to venture out into the audience to give the crowd a more personal experience with them. This sent the crowd into a frenzy that lasted well after the show.

Overall the show was packed with energy and full of surprises! This tour will only send the band into more limelight and make more fans anxious and awaiting the next opportunity to see Big Time Rush perform live again.
